Outpatient care (Paediatric)

What to expect

Our aim is to provide as much care as close to home as possible so you are likely to be offered an outpatient appointment in your local centre with one of our Network Specialists in the first instance. However, sometimes you may need to be seen at

the East Midlands Congenital Heart Centre in Leicester for further detailed tests or treatment even if you live a long way away.

Your cardiologist may want to monitor your child’s heart condition in an outpatient clinic locally to you.

At your child's outpatient appointment, they are likely to have an ECG and an echo (please see below). Further tests may then be arranged for a later date. This information helps your cardiologist plan the next steps of treatment or monitoring for your child.

As your child will be seeing a specialist and having tests, you could reasonably expect to be in the department for up to 2 hours.

During your child's visit they may also be supported by members of the multi-disciplinary team, such as Play Specialists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Dieticians, Dental Specialists,  Speech and Language Therapists and other Allied Health Professionals.

Further tests your child may need:

 ECG (Electrocardiogram)

 Echo (Echocardiogram)

 Cardiac Catheter

 CT Scan

 MRI Scan

 Exercise Test

 Ambulatory Monitoring
